EXTEND NOMINATION PERIOD FOR COMMISSION/PANEL
VACANCIES

RECOMMENDED ACTION
City Council and Redevelopment Agency extend the application period for the vacancies on the
Planning Commission, Parks, Recreation and Community Services Commission, Arts
Commission, Open Space Preservation District (OSPD) Financial Accountability and Audit
Panel, and the Newhall Redevelopment Committee to August 6, 2010; and direct City Clerk to
republish the Notice of Vacancy.
BACKGROUND
At the regular meeting of May 11, 2010, the City Council and Redevelopment Agency declared
vacancies and directed the City Clerk to post and publish the Notice of Vacancy for three
positions on each Planning Commission, Parks, Recreation and Community Services
Commission, Arts Commission, and OSPD Financial Accountability and Audit Panel, as well as
six vacancies on the Newhall Redevelopment Committee. The Notice of Vacancy was published
twice in The Signal newspaper on May 15 and June 4, 2010, and the deadline for receipt of
applications was June 18, 2010. The City Clerk submitted copies of the applications received to
the City Council and Redevelopment Agency members. At the June 22, 2010 Joint City
Council/Redevelopment Agency meeting, the members requested that, this item be returned for
consideration of an extension to the application period.
Six applications were received for the Planning Commission, eight for the Parks, Recreation and
Community Services Commission, six for the Arts Commission, one for the OSPD Financial.
Accountability and Audit Panel, and six for the Newhall Redevelopment Committee. A list of

applicants for each commission/committee/panel is attached.
Pursuant to procedures adopted by the City Council and/or Redevelopment Agency, below is a
revised recommended schedule to complete the appointment process:
May 11 Council/Agency declares vacancies (regular meeting).
May 14 City Clerk/Agency Secretary publishes and posts Notice of Vacancies
per Government Code Section 54974. Prospective candidates may obtain
an application from the City Clerk's Office or from the City's website.
(Publish notice twice and post in Clerk's Office, Libraries, and Sheriffs
Office.)
July 13 Council/Agency extends application period.
July. 16 City Clerk/Agency Secretary republishes and posts Notice of Vacancies
per Government Code Section 54974. Prospective candidates may obtain
an application from the City Clerk's Office or from the City's website.
(Republish notice once and post in Clerk's Office, Libraries, and Sheriffs
Office.)
May 14 - August 6 City Clerk/Agency Secretary receives applications.
August 9 - August 24 Council/Agency reviews applications.
August 24 Council/Agency submits nominations for ratification by the City
Council/Redevelopment Agency and make appointments (regular
meeting).

FISCAL IMPACT
Costs of publishing the Notice of Vacancies have been budgeted in FY 2010-11.
