MUNICIPAL CODE REGARDING TERM LIMITATIONS FOR
APPOINTMENTS TO CITY BOARDS AND COMMISSIONS
DEPARTMENT: Administrative Services
RECOMMENDED ACTION
City Council conduct second reading and adopt an ordinance entitled, "AN ORDINANCE OF
THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SANTA CLARITA, CALIFORNIA, AMENDING
CHAPTER 2.06 OF TITLE 2, OF THE SANTA CLARITA MUNICIPAL CODE DELETING
REQUIREMENTS REGARDING TERM LIMITATIONS FOR APPOINTMENTS TO CITY
BOARDS AND COMMISSIONS."
BACKGROUND
The City's Municipal Code limits persons who are appointed by the Mayor or City Council to a
City Board or Commission to serve no more than three terms on that board or commission. That
person, however, could serve on that same board or commission again after. the person had
served three terms if two years elapsed after the person completed his or her third term. This
limitation may prohibit the City from receiving the benefits of service from qualified and
experienced persons who wish to serve on boards and commissions consecutively for more than
those three terms. Such persons provide "institutional memory" and have specialized experience
and knowledge from their experience on the board or commission. Such experience and
knowledge assists the City in serving its residents efficiently and effectively.
On May 25, 2010, the City Council passed to second reading an amendment to the Municipal
Code that will remove these term limitations on Mayoral or City Council appointees to City
Boards or Commissions.
