BACKGROUND
The American Red Cross 2007 Southern California Wildfires Recovery, Planning, and
Assistance Program has awarded the City of Santa Clarita a grant in the amount of $28,850. This
grant is for the development and printing of a community emergency preparedness handbook.
The American Red Cross received overwhelming financial support from the American public in
response to the devastation caused by the 2007 Southern California wildfires. Through
collaborative discussions between the various American Red Cross chapters in the affected areas,
community groups, and government agencies. Subsequently, projects were developed in the
areas of preparedness and mitigation to benefit the affected communities of the 2007 wildfires.
The project purpose and benefits are to extend the educational outreach with the creation of a
comprehensive preparedness booklet to address all the potential hazards of the Santa Clarita
Valley. Based on the hazard vulnerabilities of the Santa Clarita Valley, wild land fires occur
with the most frequency and damage, followed by weather-related storms and earthquakes. The
booklet will be Santa Clarita specific, so that residents can prepare for potential hazards that
historically impact the community.
The content will be a collection of resource information including but not limited to the City, the
American Red Cross, the Santa Clarita Valley Disaster Coalition, the Santa Clarita Valley Senior
Center, Los Angeles County Sheriff, local school districts, College of the Canyons, Los Angeles
County Fire Department, California Highway Patrol, and Los Angeles County Department of
Public Health.
The preparedness handbook will not only promote awareness as a fire safe community, but also
the importance of preparedness self-sufficiency for all hazard -emergencies in the City of Santa
Clarita and the Santa Clarita Valley.
