BACKGROUND One of Mayor Weste's Top 10 Goals for 2010 is Healthy Santa Clarita, the City's program to create and sustain a healthy community. To reach this goal, the Mayor will work to give Healthy Santa Clarita "... re -launch of the Healthy Santa Clarita website and new monthly programs aimed at providing our residents with opportunities to enjoy a healthy lifestyle. Some of these will include community gardens, trails, open space, bike riding, hiking and much more." Recently, the City Council has voiced interest in the idea of a Community Garden which is aimed at providing residents with opportunities to enjoy a healthy lifestyle. The Mayor has met with interested residents about the concept, and there is a proposal to implement a Community Garden at Central Park. A number of community residents are very interested in starting a Community Garden, and have volunteered to take the lead in the planning and implementation of the Santa Clarita Community Garden. City staff will assist the Community Garden group as needed during the planning process and assist the group with oversight of the garden once it is operating. Staff has identified approximately 1/2 acre of land at Central Park for a Community Garden. Staff would recommend that the City provide irrigation water for the garden.
