Honorable Marsha McLean, Mayor
City of Santa Clarita
23920 Valencia Boulevard,.#300
Santa Clarita, California 91355-2196
Dear Mayor McLean:
For the past several years, the City of Santa Clarita has received significant criminal justice
grant funds under Assembly Bill 1913, that has aided us in our efforts to make Santa Clarita
a safer place to live and work. This year's grant provides $213,620 from the State of
California for the Citizen's Option for Public Safety (COPS) Program. The COPS grant has
been used to enhance our efforts to curb youth crime in Santa Clarita. Specifically, the
funding has enabled us to partially pay for salaries for the COBRA Team.
In the past years, in addition to COBRA Team's mission of working to decrease gang .
activity, graffiti, and other juvenile crimes, they also provide gang and drug education
awareness for all seventh -grade students in Santa Clarita, and are an integral part of the Teen
Court intervention program. In 2010, the COBRA Team handled 2,210 Cases involving
1,351 suspects.
I am asking that you approve the use of the COPS Grant funds to continue these programs.
Sincerely,
LEROY D. BAZA, SHERIFF
Paul Becker, Captain
