RECOMMENDED ACTION
1. City Council accept 2012 Sobriety Checkpoint Mini -Grant in the amount of $81,018.80 from
the California Office of Traffic Safety (OTS)/University of California Berkeley, Safe
Transportation Research and Education Center (SafeTREC).
2. Increase estimated revenues in account 259-4461.007 by $81,018.80 in Fiscal Year 2011-12.
3. Increase estimated expenditures in account 16126-5161.001 (Contractual Services) by
$80,400 and in account 16126-5111.001 (Special Supplies) by $618.80 in Fiscal Year 2011-12.
4. Authorize City Manager, or designee, to execute any contract documents, change orders, or
amendments arising out of this program, subject to City Attorney's approval.
BACKGROUND
The City of Santa Clarita/Santa Clarita Valley Sheriffs Station has been awarded a grant in the
amount of $81,018.80 for the 2012 Sobriety Checkpoint Mini -Grant Program from the California
Office of Traffic Safety (OTS). This program, administered by UC Berkeley Safe Transportation
Research and Education Center (SafeTREC), aims to reduce the number of victims killed and
injured in alcohol -impaired crashes. Funding will be used for personnel overtime costs to
conduct a total of 12 sobriety checkpoints by September 4, 2012. This includes two national
mobilization periods: 1) the winter holiday mobilization period, December 16, 2011, - January 1,
2012; and 2) the Labor Day mobilization period, August 17, 2012, - September 3, 2012.
ALTERNATIVE ACTIONS
Other direction as determined by City Council.
FISCAL IMPACT
The total cost of this program is $81,018.80, to be offset completely by grant funds.
