Mr. Cruz has excellent communication skills, is extremely organized, reliable and is very personable. He works well independently and as part of a team and is able to follow through to ensure that the job gets done. His background with the City of Los Angeles Legal Department provides him with a platform to make informed decisions on the important issues that the Parks, Recreation & Community Services Commission faces. As a long-time resident of Santa Clarita, Mr. Cruz is extremely committed to serving the community and concerned regarding the growth and development of the City of Santa Clarita. Please feel free to contact me if any further information is needed Respectfully, Andrew G. Fried AGF:jmd Kristopher Dams 1110 Pebble Beach Drive, Upland, CA 91784 (661) 373-0792 June 15, 2012 To Whom It May Concern: It is my pleasure to recommend conununity advocate and municipal legal professional Michael Cruz for a connnission position with the City of Santa Clarita. I came to know Mr. Ci rz over the years as an intensely involved citizen who strives to make a positive impact on his community. This is evidenced by his runs for Santa Clarita City Council in 2006 and Newhall County Water District Board of Directors in 2009. As a married man for 17 years with two children entering their teenage years, his devotion to community stems from his devotion to family. Just like you, Michael wants to maintain Santa Clarita's safe and healthy family environment. Having been raised in Santa Clarita myself and now pursuing a Juris Doctorate, I know what that type of environment entails: a commitment to abating gang activity, providing safe activities for youths, and guiding Santa Clarita's growth in a way that reduces harmful air quality and long commute times, which keep parents separated from their children. Michael's public and private career further these worthy goals. As a legal professional with the Los Angeles City Attorney Office's Safe Neighborhoods and Gang Division for more than 10 years, he executes the process of ridding gang members and narcotics users of safehouses. His current and previous service on the Siemia Ridge Homeowner's Association, SCV Jaycees board, Community Hiking Club board, and Canyon Country Advisory Cormnittee gives him the required foresight and creativity to help plan for a safe and healthy enviromnent for local children. He has also been a longtime advocate of public transportation and irmovative urban plarming strategies that promote safer air quality levels and counter traffic congestion. Given these qualities, Michael Cruz would be a valuable asset to the citizens of Santa Clarita in any capacity in which he serves. SI ATURE DATE M -EASE ATTACH THREE (3) LETTERS OF RECOMMENDATION TO THIS APPLICATION FOR CITY USE ONLY Received by / date It -j- Your Reasons For Wanting to Serve I am an avid proponent of a strong network of parks, recreation and community services and the benefits that they bring to our community. Whether encouraging healthy outdoor activity, promoting community through town events or contributing to smart development that ensures a rapidly growing city maintains the space to ensure a healthy balance and hometown atmosphere, I would welcome the chance to represent and advocate on behalf of our community for the continued evolution and growth of our parks, recreation and community services. I've had the good fortune to travel and lived abroad, as well as lived in several small to medium sized communities recognized as some of the "best places to live" in America (Cary, North Carolina; McKinney, Texas; Castle Rock, Colorado). My wife and I purposely chose these towns because they demonstrated progressive thinking and execution as relates to the importance of parks, recreation, community services and historic preservation in balancing and providing a superior quality of life. While living in Castle Rock, CO, I served as Vice Chair of the town's Parks & Recreation Commission in 2007 and 2008 (Castle Rock was a 2008 National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA) Gold Medal Finalist). In this capacity, I advocated for expanding and networking the trails system within town, promoted P&R-sponsored events, spoke at new park facility launch events and volunteered on P&R-led soft surface trail construction projects within the town's open space areas. When we chose to buy a home in the Los Angeles area, we looked at several communities but were drawn to Santa Clarita in large measure due to the clear priority the town places on its parks and recreation system. Case in point, the vision and execution of Santa Clarita's paseo network is truly second to none. This said, I believe the best always is always looking to get better. As with my time in Castle Rock, I'd welcome the opportunity to join Santa Clarita's Parks, Recreation and Community Services Commission as a conduit to the community and advocate for the continued growth and innovation of this vital element of our town. Qualifications or Experience Served as Vice Chair of the Parks and Recreation Commission, Castle Rock, CO from 2007-2008. Castle Rock, CO was a 2008 National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA) Gold Medal Finalist. Please see attached recommendation from Rob Hanna, Director of Parks and Recreation, City of Castle Rock (http://www.crgov.com/). Personally, my wife and I believe in the benefits of having a strong network of parks, recreation and community services and the value they bring to our family and community. As parents we have actively limited our children's "screen time" and encouraged outdoor activity. More often than not, our family leisure time revolves around discovering new outdoor places through hiking, biking or geocaching. Professionally, throughout my career I have served successfully in central roles in start-ups or in new ventures within mature companies, demonstrating the ability to envision new products and services, advocate for them across all levels of management and see them through to successful launch. This includes serving as a founding team member of Travelocity, building and growing it into one of the largest travel agencies in the world. ON TOWN OF CASTLE ROCK C O L O R A D O June 11, 2012 Re: Letter of recommendation for Doug Spicher To Whom It May Concern: Mr. Doug Spicher was a valuable member of the Town of Castle Rock's Parks and Recreation Commission from June 2007 through November 2008. During his tenure, Doug participated in monthly Commission meetings, Town Council meetings related to Parks and Recreation and attended numerous grand opening celebrations including Festival Park, Ridgeline Open Space, Rhyolite Regional Park and Bison Park. He scheduled luncheons for Commission members to network outside of regularly scheduled Commission meetings. He was always highly involved and interested in all aspects of the Parks and Recreation Department. He was very interested in updates on construction projects, volunteer community workdays, public open houses and suggested wireless Internet at our park locations and benches to be placed on our open spaces and trails. Several benches have since been built as Eagle Scout Projects and placed on multiple properties throughout Town. While on the Commission, he also heard updates and presentations and voted for items such as endorsing the Parks and Recreation Master Plan Update in 2007, grant applications and naming nominations for parks, open space and trails, Recreation Center scholarship recommendations, proposed fees for recreation and golf, deed of conservation easements, outside lighting for a regional park, reservation and use policies, minor league baseball stadium discussions, volunteer opportunities through POST Partners, right-of-way median care and level of service options, etc. During Doug's term, the Parks and Recreation Department was a 2008 NRPA Gold Medal Finalist. I was very excited to hear that Doug was submitting his application to serve as a member of the Santa Clarita Parks, Recreation and Community Services Commission. My family and I have lived in Santa Clarita for the last 10 years. I am also a proud member of the small business community. My husband Richard and I have run a successful Farmers agency for the last 7 years. I serve as a board member for FEAPAC (Farmers Employee & Agent Political Action Committee) and my key role is to be a voice for my family, community and my industry in Sacramento. I have had the pleasure of spending time on many occasions with our local representatives including Assemblyman Cameron Smyth and Senator Tony Strickland to talk about key issues that affect my business and community. We are very involved, and when I see someone with outstanding drive and passion to serve, I must come forward and give my support. Doug Spicher is someone that I believe would be a huge asset to Parks, Recreation and Community Services. He believes that not only is it important to be a strong and positive role model for his family, but that serving his community helps build a positive environment for other families and business owners for many generations to come. Because Nye live next door to each other, our families often get together and our kids play out in the front yard. Doug is always happy to organize a bike ride on Valencia's beautiful Paseos and trails for his family and anyone else in the neighborhood who would like to join him. After many dinners together he also understands our point of view when it comes to balancing a small business in Santa Clarita and raising a family. Our families always provide support for each other, and we are blessed to have them as our neighbors and friends. Doug Spicher wants our community to grow but continue to keep our hometown family friendly feeling. I would like to go on record as saying that he would absolutely be the best candidate for this position with Parks, Recreation and Community Services for the City of Santa Clarita If you should have any questions at all, please don't hesitate to give me a call. Hart Union High School District Dr. Paul Priesz Principal June 3, 2012 To whom it may concern: It is with pleasure and strong conviction that I highly recommend Eric Schmidt for a second term as Arts Commissioner for Santa Clarita. Eric has the experience, expertise, commitment, and vision to continue to serve so admirably and productively. Eric is an accomplished and award -wining composer, orchestrator, and publisher, and is a member of prestigious professional organizations. He has given his talents to serve church, school, and community musicians and groups, and to benefit important causes in Santa Clarita. In addition, he has mentored numerous young artists through his work as a professor at USC, leader of many performing groups, and as an individual who has donated countless hours of service in a variety of ways. This service distinguishes him from so many other talented professionals. Eric has a deep appreciation for the arts and the potential for good that the arts offer. He mentors, guides, counsels, directs, challenges, and inspires youth and adults alike to better performance and deeper meaning. He provides special opportunities for musicians in professional recording studios, whether it is in his home studio or in places ranging from Hollywood to Nashville. Eric is enthusiastic, encouraging, uplifting, and just plain fun to work with. He is passionate about the arts and cares deeply about people. He demonstrates integrity, respect, and dignity in all that he does. Eric brings humor, joy and love to the arts, and is one of the most well -liked, respected, and appreciated professional musicians I have met. As a parent and educator I have seen first-hand Eric's work in the community, and have benefitted from it. I have great appreciation for the impact Eric has had on so many artists, young and old. He continues to mold, model, and inspire the talents of so many artists in Santa Clarita. As Arts Commissioner for a second term, Eric would continue to help the arts grow and flourish in Santa Clarita to the greater good and enrichment of all. Falho Pastor Emeritus June 6, 2012 Dear Arts Commission Selection Committee, I would like to recommend J. Eric Schmidt to continue as a member of the Santa Clarita Arts Commission. Eric has been an incredible asset to our church musically as a director, composer and musician with all the choirs and bands of the congregation. In this capacity he has been the director of both the children and youth choirs for over ten years. Eric is a vital asset to our congregations music program by bringing both excellence to the program and inspiring young people of various musical abilities. He has served in these various capacities for almost twenty years. I feel Eric would also continue to bring great wisdom and relevance to the Arts Commission as I have heard the amazing vision he has for arts in the Santa Clarita Valley. Eric is not only an accomplished artist but one who understands the need to bridge both classic and modern arts. He also is gifted in the arts beyond music. Last year we were in need of some architectural advice to update our campus and Eric put together an amazing plan that is now in use. In a time when the arts are being removed from the schools, we need highly creative and visionary people such as Eric to find ways to guide the SCV on the Arts Commission. I have also been to Eric's home on a number of occasions and am always highly impressed by his personal music and art collections. As I'm sure you are aware he is greatly respected for his musical gifts at USC and within the SCV has been instrumental in putting together the "Arts Blueprint." As both a community leader and a Santa Clarita resident, I would highly recommend J. Eric Schmidt to continue his role as one of the Arts Commissioners. I know that my congregation, family and our community will benefit from the vision he has for our city. Eric has given back to our congregation for over 30 years through his support, funding (Founding Circle Member of the Santa Clarita Master Chorale) and vision. I can't imagine anyone better suited for this position than Eric. Please feel free to call me or email (ishaverOumcv.orc) me with any further questions Sincerely, n / /psr2 e /mss Rev. His forward thinking ideas and his easy going style are perfect for the vision we all have in Santa Clarita, he is able to communicate the vision that we all have in an intelligent and positive manner. We need to not break the continuity and foundation that has been established the last couple of years. I highly- recommend Mr. Schmidt to continue to lead us as a commissioner for many years to come.
