AND GIRLS CLUB
DEPARTMENT: Parks, Recreation, and Community Services
City Council discuss and provide direction to staff regarding one-time financial support to the
Santa Clarita Valley Senior Center and the Santa Clarita Valley Boys and Girls Club from the
City Contingency Fund.
BACKGROUND
During the last several years, revenue for programming at both the Santa Clarita Valley Senior
Center (SCVSC) and the Santa Clarita Valley Boys and Girls Club (SCVBGC) has declined. hi
addition, demand for these programs has increased.
Specifically, the SCVSC food and nutrition programs have faced a shortfall in funding to meet
demand, and the SCVSC reports that limitations on funding has decreased the number of daily
meals from approximately 150 a day to 125 a day that they can deliver to local seniors. Funding
for the program is currently provided by the Federal Government and is administered by Los
Angeles County through a federal pass through.
The SCVBGC is facing reductions in programming and staff due to declining donations and
related fundraising. Programming cuts and staff reductions have already occurred, but Club
officials anticipate further reductions and possibly more drastic measures such as closing for days
or closing a site depending on future revenues.
