GRANT PROGRAM — FISCAL YEAR 2012-13

RECOMMENDED ACTION
1. City Council accept 2013 Sobriety Checkpoint Grant in the amount of $131,500 from the
California Office of Traffic Safety (OTS)/University of California Berkeley, Safe Transportation
Research and Education Center (SafeTREC).
2. Increase estimated revenues in account 259-4461.007 by $131,500 in Fiscal Year 2012-13.
3. Increase estimated expenditures in account 16126-5161.001 (Contractual Services) by
$129,500 and in account 16126-5111.001 (Special Supplies) by $2,000 in Fiscal Year 2012-13.
4. Authorize City Manager, or designee, to execute any contract documents, change orders, or
amendments arising out of this program, subject to City Attorney's approval.
BACKGROUND
Through a competitive process, the City of Santa Clarita/Santa Clarita Valley Sheriffs Station
has been awarded a grant in the amount of $131,500 for the 2013 Sobriety Checkpoint Grant
Program from the California Office of Traffic Safety (OTS). This program, administered by UC
Berkeley Safe Transportation Research and Education Center (SafeTREC), aims to reduce the
number of victims killed and injured in alcohol -impaired crashes. Funds will be used for
personnel overtime costs to conduct 14 sobriety checkpoints by September 30, 2013, and for
OTS -approved checkpoint supplies.
ALTERNATIVE ACTIONS
Other direction as determined by City Council.
FISCAL IMPACT
The total cost of this program is $131,500, to be offset completely by grant funds.
