HomeMy WebLinkAbout2012-12-11 - AGENDA REPORTS - VECTOR CONTROL APPOINTMENT (2)Agenda Item• 3 CITY OF SANTA CLARITA AGENDA REPORT CONSENT CALENDAR City Manager Approval: ✓//�� Item to be presented by: Robert Newman DATE: December 11, 2012 SUBJECT: APPOINTMENT OF CITY OF SANTA CLARITA REPRESENTATIVE TO THE GREATER LOS ANGELES VECTOR CONTROL DISTRICT DEPARTMENT: Public Works RECOMMENDED ACTION City Council reappoint Robert Newman, Director of Public Works, to the Greater Los Angeles Vector Control District Board to represent the City of Santa Clarita for a two-year term, commencing on January 7, 2013. BACKGROUND The City of Santa Clarita (City) received notice that Director of Public Works Robert Newman's term as Trustee of the Greater Los Angeles Vector Control District (District) Board of Trustees will expire on January 7, 2013. Mr. Newman has represented the City of Santa Clarita on this board since 2009. Pursuant to Section 2024 of the California Health and Safety Code governing the dates of term of office of members appointed to the Board of Trustees, the City Council may reappoint Trustee Robert Newman, or appoint a new trustee for either a two- or four-year term of office, commencing on January 7, 2013. The District is a non -enterprise, independent special district, which acts as a public health agency as a result of legislation incorporated in the California State Health and Safety Code. The District's objective is to protect the health of the public from vectors, which are considered to be any animal or insect capable of transmitting disease or that is a public health nuisance. l In general, the District's governing power is vested in the Board of Trustees, which is comprised of 35 members (one for each city within the District). The regularly scheduled board meetings are held on the second Thursday of each month at 7:00 p.m. at the District's headquarters in Santa Fe Springs. The trustees receive a travel expense of $100 for attending each regularly scheduled board meeting. The minimum qualifications for the position require the person to (1) be appointed by the City Council, (2) be a resident voter of the representative city within the District, and (3) serve a full two- or four-year term. ALTERNATIVE ACTIONS 1. Do not reappoint Robert Newman to represent the City of Santa Clarita as a member of the Greater Los Angeles Vector Control District Board of Trustees and appoint a new trustee for either a two- or four-year term of office. 2. Other action as determined by the City Council. FISCAL IMPACT None. M
