BACKGROUND The Standard Plans for Public Works Construction and the Standard Specifications for Public Works Construction (Standard Plans and Specifications) are commonly referred to as "The Greenbook." These Standard Plans and Specifications are frequently used for the design and construction of Public Works projects such as streets, storm drains, and sewers. The Standard Plans and Specifications contain an extensive collection of plans and specifications for methods and materials of construction, which helps maintain the desired high level of uniformity for construction. Adoption of the latest standards is necessary to keep current with the latest construction materials and systems available in Public Works construction. APPRUDWER However, these Standard Plans and Specifications are the standard in the industry and are used in the majority of projects to also promote competitive bidding by contractors. They are updated and revised periodically, as needed, to keep up with the industry.
