ESTABLISHMENT OF LOADING ZONE NEAR 24242 MAIN
STREET
Community Development
RECOMMENDED ACTION
City Council approve the establishment of two 20 -foot loading zones (yellow curb) directly
adjacent to 24242 Main Street, on 6th Street.
BACKGROUND
On September 26, 2013, the City of Santa Clarita received a letter from Mr. Doug Holiday,
President of the Canyon Theater Guild Board of Directors, requesting the City establish
an on -street loading zone with enough space for two automobiles on 6th Street, closest to the
Main Street intersection. A map of the requested loading zone is attached.
Mr. Holiday claims it is currently difficult for patrons to find short-term parking near the theater.
The basis for the request is to provide the senior population with mobility challenges better
access to the theater.
The Canyon Theater Guild has previously expressed the need for additional parking for their
patrons during their show times and special events that occur regularly in the area. In response
to that need, the City currently leases the parking lot located at 24222 Main Street to provide
public parking for patrons in Old Town Newhall. The cost of the lease agreement is shared by
both the City and the Canyon Theater Guild.
The establishment of two 20 -foot loading zones (yellow curb) is consistent with Section
21458(a) (2) of the California Vehicle Code, and Section 12.64.120 'Passenger Loading" of the
Santa Clarita Municipal Code. In order for this action to be implemented, the Santa Clarita
Municipal Code requires that the City Council approve this request. Requests of this nature have
been accommodated in the past, most recently with the establishment of a loading zone for Egg
Plantation.
ALTERNATIVE ACTIONS
Other actions as determined by the City Council.
FISCAL IMPACT
Installation of two 20 -foot sections of yellow curb is estimated at $500. Adequate Gas Tax
Funds (Fund 230) are available in the Traffic Signs and Markings Account 14504-5141.008.
