BACKGROUND At the December 11, 2012, regular City Council meeting, Councilmember Boydston asked to agendize to a future meeting discussion of the mayor selection process. When the City of Santa Clarita incorporated in 1987, the City Council adopted a policy of rotating the role of the mayor between each of the councilmembers on an annual basis in December. In April 1999, the City Council reviewed this item and chose to change the selection of a mayor and mayor pro tem to a majority vote of the City Council. The majority vote process has been in place for the past 13 years. Mayoral selection was last discussed at the regular City Council meeting on May 8, 2012, at which time the City Council considered a proposal to change the date of the appointment of the mayor and mayor pro tem positions from December to the second meeting in April each year. City Council decided to continue the mayor transition in December of each year and add a ratification of the current mayor and mayor pro tem agenda item at the same meeting in April when the election results are certified. The majority vote process to choose a new mayor and mayor pro tem was not changed. ALTERNATIVE ACTIONS Other action as directed by City Council. MOri 0h 1--aiL-ev FISCAL IMPACT None by this action.
