CITY OF SANTA CLARITA
AGENDA REPORT

Item to be presented by: Andrew Yi
DATE: April 23, 2013
SUBJECT: REESTABLISHMENT OF PARKING ON JAKES WAY NEAR
SANDY DRIVE
DEPARTMENT: Public Works
RECOMMENDED ACTION
City Council approve the reestablishment of parking on Jakes Way near Sandy Drive and
authorize staff to remove existing no -parking signs.
BACKGROUND
After the recent Vista Canyon/Fair Oaks/Jakes Way annexation, a request was forwarded from
the Los Angeles County Department of Public Works, Traffic and Lighting Division, from
residents to remove the existing "No Parking 7:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. except Saturdays, Sundays,
and Holidays" restrictions on Jakes Way from 1,110 feet west of Sandy Drive to 1,370 feet east
of Sandy Drive (see attached diagram). The residents of River Ranch Townhomes indicated the
condominium complex was interested in starting a petition to the County with resident
signatures.
City staff conducted an evaluation of the area, and determined parking could be reestablished in
this area without a significant impact to current traffic operations. The Sheriffs Department was
also consulted and agrees parking could be reestablished. The width of Jakes Way is sufficient to
provide for the current two-way left -turn lane and one lane of travel in each direction, and still
allows for on -street parking. The additional on -street parking would help address the high
parking demand that is common near multifamily developments and is consistent with current
on -street parking conditions along the remainder of the roadway. Traffic volume projections
indicate one lane of travel in each direction will be adequate to meet the future demand.
Staff also requests the City Council establish 25 feet of no stopping anytime on either side of
Grace Lane to provide adequate sight distance for motorists leaving the River Ranch Townhomes
(see attached diagram).

Staff reached out to the property manager of River Ranch Townhomes, Mr. Jim Wooledge, who
supported removal of the no -parking signs. This condominium complex is the only impacted
community.
ALTERNATIVE ACTIONS
Other action as determined by the City Council.
FISCAL IMPACT
The work, estimated at $500, will entail the removal of approximately 21 existing no parking
signs and painting 50 feet of curb red. Adequate funds are available in the Traffic Signs and
Markings Account, 14504-5141.008.
